Wildlife of Chert Hollow Farm

Back to Ecology & Landscape

We enjoy studying and documenting the wildlife present here, whether beneficial or pests. We try to keep a camera with us wherever we go, making some spur-of-the-moment shots possible. Some animals are harder to photograph than others, but we're working to build a photo collection that captures the diversity here. Keep checking back for new additions as we acquire them!

NOTE: All of the animals shown here were photographed live and unplanned, i.e. we didn't net or trap them with the intention of photographing them. A few were not in very good shape, like the baby mouse and baby rabbit, but we didn't harm them to get the photo (the cat brought in the baby rabbit). We just stumbled across them, as happens when you're outdoors enough to take advantage of chance. The caged raccoon and possum were caught in humane traps in our garden (after raiding our crops), and released elsewhere. The hummingbird got into the house through an open door, and exhausted itself against a window by the time I gently caught it and carried it outside, where it rested in my hand long enough for a few quick pictures before recovering and whizzing off.
